I wish it were simpler, but the anguish that we experience and that we sometimes carry from childhood is not limited to our teachers, parents, family or friends, but rather different social groups come together at one point that pressure us in a more or less way. less direct and that harm us, even without the executors intending it. We do not blame them, because quite simply, they are also victims of social pressure. We all are.

Type 1. Conformative social pressure

The first type of social pressure to which we are exposed is conformative social pressure. It refers to social expectations and the norms that are imposed within society itself. Human beings feel the need to be accepted in society. We know this when we try to fit in among our classmates, coworkers, and social groups par excellence.

This is palpable in the need to be dressed or made up in a certain way, to follow a musical style or trend, etc. An example is the young person who does not particularly enjoy going to a nightclub but pretends to have a great time, so as not to be left behind in the group fun.

Perhaps the young person would prefer to defend other ideologies or dedicate their time to other entertainment, but they do not dare to express them for fear of being discriminated against or looked down upon. 

Type 2. Normative pressure

The norms can be social or cultural But they greatly influence our well-being if we do not want to be branded as rebels without a cause and face criticism and punishment from everyone around us. Maybe you live in a society where wearing a miniskirt or wearing earrings as a man is not allowed and perhaps you would like to wear them but you don't dare to avoid being publicly disapproved of. And in parallel, if you are rejected on the street, you can also be reprimanded at home if your environment is influenced, as is logical, by those same social and cultural norms. In the end, there is no escape and normative pressure is big.

Type 3. Peer pressure

As you will already be guessing, these types of pressure They feed off each other, because we are all part of different groups and are immersed in various pressure groups. 

You have to have a lot of inner strength to accept that we will be different and decide not to submit to those pressures. For example, the group pressure It is powerful, especially in adolescence. You only have to look among adolescents who have entered the world of drugs or tobacco, alcohol, etc., because their group of friends does it. They could have freely said: “no”, but a fear within them led them to accept the experiment. 

Especially in these contexts, maturity is what will lead us to defend our identity above social pressures and remain firm in our decisions without others indirectly deciding for us.

Type 4. Social pressure from peers

Although attempts are currently being made to leave these behind social pressures, the roles of men and women continue to be differentiated, with limiting and harmful beliefs such as, among others, that men do not cry; that women should mainly be in charge of housework; or that women don't watch football while having a beer. Why not? 

Nor is it true that there are professions that should be performed by men or women. Both sexes are equally valid for any task. And the opposite is a gender pressure that is instilled in us camouflaged.

Type 6. Family pressure

What to say about families? This is, without a doubt, where we receive the most damage. Because our family should be our refuge, it is where we are most sensitive. Raised from newborns listening to rules and beliefs, we are terrified of being rejected and we carry that unconscious or conscious fear of disappointing our parents and elders.  

Is the family pressure the most harmful of all, because if within our family we find understanding, we will be able to have our space of escape and face the rest of the pressures with greater integrity, because we will have an environment where we are listened to and taken into account.

Type 7. Cultural pressure

It is social thoughts that determine culture and culture that is reflected in social conventions. This is where we find what is moral or not at a certain time and group; even what is meant by success. 

The person can be considered to be successful or unsuccessful based on the achievements or actions that these cultural norms include. For example, there are societies where the successful man is the one who has sex with countless women; or the successful woman is the one who has many children; Those who succeed are those who get a villa on the beach or those who accumulate the most deposits in their bank, etc.

Sexual tendencies may also be limited. If orientations such as homosexuality, demisexuality or others are frowned upon, it will cause repression.

Type 8. Media pressure

La media pressure It is the one that spreads through the media. It is more influential on young people, although there are adults who also, based on their cultural level, are influenced by the media. We must add the role of social networks today.
