Safety Tips: Tires

The tires are the only points of contact between the vehicle and the ground. They must be taken care of to preserve the quality of their services.

Assembly and disassembly
The assembly, disassembly, inflation and balancing must be carried out with the appropriate material and handled by qualified personnel in order to ensure, among other aspects:

  • respecting the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations regarding the choice of tires: structure, dimension, speed code, load index.
  • verification of the external and internal appearance of the tire before mounting.
  • respecting the procedures for mounting, dismounting, balancing and inflation of the tire and the systematic change of the valve.
  • Take into account the recommendations and information on the sidewalls of the tires (direction of rotation or direction of mounting).
  • Respect the operating pressures recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, by the tire manufacturer or by the professional preparer (transformer).
  • Take into account the particularities of some specific tires (tire for running without air ...)
  • After mounting the wheels on the vehicle, it is recommended to tighten with a torque wrench applying the torque defined by the vehicle manufacturer.

Tires maintenance and storage
They should be stored:

  • In a ventilated, dry place with a warm temperature, avoiding direct sunlight and bad weather.
  • away from any chemical, solvent or hydrocarbon that can alter the rubber.
  • away from any object that could penetrate the rubber (metal point, wood, ..)
  • They should not be stored in batteries for a long period, except in assembled and inflated assemblies. Avoid crushing the tires under other objects.
  • Keep away from sources of heat with flames or incandescent flames and from any device that can cause sparks or electric shocks (battery charger, welding machine ...).
  • It is recommended to handle the tires with protective gloves.

Use of tires
The choice of tire must be in accordance with the original equipment of the vehicle according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Any other configuration must be validated by a tire professional who will be able to propose the solution best adapted to the use, respecting the regulations in force.

  • A used tire must be verified by a tire professional before being used.
  • Tires with the same sculpture pattern must be used on the same axle.
  • If only 2 tires are replaced it is recommended to mount new or less used tires on the rear axle.
  • If the vehicle is equipped with winter tires, it is advisable to always fit four tires, especially if they are studded tires.
  • Never use tires with the wrong pressure, at a speed higher than their speed code, or with a load higher than their load index.
  • The “temporary use” type spare wheel should only be used during the emergency period.

Surveillance and maintenance
Check the pressures monthly and always before embarking on a long journey (do not forget the spare wheel) and correct them if they do not correspond to those recommended by the manufacturer. The pressures of
Tires must be checked when cold (vehicle with more than 2 hours without rolling or that has only run less than 3 km at reduced speed) if checked when hot, add 0,3 bar to the recommended pressure (300g).

  • Inflating with nitrogen does not remove the periodic check of tire pressure.
  • In the event of abnormal pressure loss, have the inside and outside of the tire checked, the condition of the rim and the valve.
  • Check the level of tire wear (replace when the legal limit is reached), and consult a tire professional when abnormal wear is observed or a difference in the level of wear between two tires on the same axle.
  • All visible punctures, cuts, deformations should be examined by a tire professional.
  • Never use a damaged or flat tire without the prior verification of a professional.
  • All abnormal manifestations such as vibrations, noise, side shot, should be subject to immediate verification by a professional.
  • For tires that allow running without air under certain conditions, the recommendations of the tire manufacturer must be observed.
  • All abnormal manifestations such as vibrations, noise, side shot, should be subject to immediate verification by yourself and by a professional.
  • All repairs must be done by a tire professional.
  • All tires that show any obvious signs of aging or fatigue (cracked rubber) should be examined by a professional, even if they have not rolled or have rolled very little (example: spare wheel, caravan, trailer, mobile home..)
