Problems with the car: The exhaust pipe long smoke

If our car is emitting smoke from the exhaust system it is not good news, but it does not mean that you need to rebuild your engine or buy a new car. In many cases, you can determine what is happening to your engine by the color of the smoke it emits.

The smoke that your car can emit can usually be one of the following 3 colors:

White smoke: It is caused by the introduction of water or antifreeze into the engine cylinders and the machine is burning them with gasoline. Steam is what produces white smoke. There is probably a problem with the gaskets due to the machine overheating, excessive heat caused the gasket to fail and allowed the antifreeze to enter the cylinder.

Warning: If the motor oil has a chocolate texture, it means that it is contaminated. Starting your engine under these conditions can cause major mechanical damage to the machine, call your mechanic.

Blue Smoke: It is caused by engine oil entering the cylinders and is being burned along with the air and gasoline mixture. Only a small drop of oil is needed to produce blue smoke. This situation is more common in older or high-mileage cars than in new cars.

Probably some seal, gasket or ring designed to keep the oil out of the cylinder is failing. Too much oil inside the cylinder causes the spark plug that produces the necessary spark for combustion to stop working, in this case the spark plug must be replaced and cleaned of the oil.

Using thicker oil or an additive designed to reduce oil drips can help reduce the amount of oil that seeps into the cylinder.

Black Smoke: It is caused by excess gasoline that has entered the cylinders and it cannot be completely burned. Other problems that usually appear at the same time as the smoke are:

  • Low machine performance
  • Low gas mileage / gallon
  • Strong smell of gasoline

Among some of the reasons why the engine is burning a lot of gasoline we can mention:

  • improperly adjusted carburetor,
  • faulty fuel pump
  • faulty gasoline injector
  • faulty engine computer
  • faulty computer sensor

Warning: If the engine oil has a strong gasoline odor, this means it is contaminated. Don't start your engine and call your mechanic.
