Prevention of HPV in men

what-is-vph

El human papillomavirus (HPV) it is a common virus that is transmitted sexually. There are more than 40 types of HPV that can be transmitted sexually and the lesions are most frequently located on the penis, anus, skin adjacent to the genitals, mouth and all those parts of the body that are exposed to direct contact with the virus.

A man who contracts the HPV virus can cause genital warts (or condylomata acuminata) to even cancer of the penis or anus.

what are the signs and symptoms? Among men who develop health problems, the following symptoms are manifested:

Signs of genital warts:

  • One or more lumps on the penis, testicles, groin, thighs, or anus.
  • Warts can be raised, flat, or cauliflower-shaped, and are usually painless.
  • Warts can appear weeks or months after sexual contact with an infected person.

Signs and symptoms of anal cancer:

  • Sometimes there are no signs or symptoms.
  • Bleeding, pain, itching, or discharge from the anus.
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the anus or groin area.
  • Changes in bowel habits or the shape of stools.

Signs of penile cancer:

  • Initial signs: changes in color, thickening of the skin or growth of tissue in the penis.
  • Later signs: a lump or sore on the penis. It is usually not painful, but in some cases the sore can be painful and bleed.
  • There may be no symptoms until the cancer is very advanced.

HPV is spread through genital contact, most often through vaginal and anal sex. Since HPV usually does not cause symptoms, most men and women can acquire the virus and pass it on to their partners without knowing it. A person can have HPV even if it has been years since they had sexual intercourse.

There is currently no approved test or test to detect HPV in men. Early detection will allow us not to continue infecting healthy people. There is still no treatment or cure for HPV, although health problems caused by this virus can be treated.

Treatment will consist of eradicating the lesions caused by the HPV virus, either by medical or surgical treatment. The important thing is to make an early diagnosis to be able to rule out diseases related to cancer or its possible cure of the injuries caused by this virus, but also from the aesthetic and quality of life.

The best way to reduce the likelihood of HPV infection is by using a condom (all the time and correctly), although this virus usually infects areas that a condom does not cover, so the condom does not fully protect against this virus.
