Health insurance for young people costs half that of older people

Insured young people

Many times we wonder at what age it is better to have health insurance. The truth is that there is no fixed age to do it, but it will depend on the personal life of each one. But what is clear is that the price will affect. To what extent can it influence?

Age is one of the main factors to take into account in health insurance, since based on the age you are, the insurance can be more expensive or cheaper. For which age groups can health insurance be more expensive?

An older person will have to pay almost double more than a young person for contracting health insurance, regardless of whether it is a basic one (it usually includes fewer medical specialties or more basic tests of primary medicine or pediatrics, for example) or complete (with a greater number of medical specialties, hospitalization of several days and for various reasons or access to more serious tests in branches of urology, gynecology, oncology, among others).

This is one of the conclusions drawn from a study in which the prices of the different types of health insurance of most of the Spanish insurers for three age groups (1960, 1980 and 2000).

Thus, a 60-year-old person will have to pay approximately € 653 / year for basic insurance, while for a 20-year-old the cost will be € 393 / year. In the case of full insurance, the difference is between 1.582 and 782 euros, respectively.

This is so because in the end it is more likely that an older person needs to see a doctor more often than a younger person. Hence, the price is more expensive for the first case than for the second.

It is true that there may be specific cases in which a younger person needs more medical attention. In general, insurance companies usually conduct a health questionnaire on the basis of which they will estimate the price of the insurance. The amount will be higher or lower depending on the degree of the disease.

Therefore, the general rule is that the older you are, the greater the financial amount you will have to pay. But yes, the state of health of each person also comes into play.
