How to have 100% hydraulic steering?

Those who own a car with hydraulic steering they have the feeling of being able to turn the steering wheel "with one finger." But if you begin to notice that you must make an extra effort, you hear some noise in the turn, or the steering wheel does not return easily to its original position, surely you are having problems with the hydraulic steering of your vehicle.

Before running to the mechanic, you can verify that these problems and noises are not caused by a lack of fluid in the pump. Where should you look, what should you watch and what liquid to add?

  • Locate the power steering pump reservoir. It is usually located on the left (looking at the engine from the front) and is very similar to the water tank. The liquid is transparent, bright, reddish in color and its viscosity is similar to oil.
  • Verify that the liquid level has not dropped below the minimum mark. It is recommended that you do it, after having used the vehicle, that is to say in hot. In this way the measurements are more reliable.
  • If you need liquid, when you add it, do not exceed the maximum limit, since an excess of it could cause the pump to work forced and begin to fail.
  • Check that the loss of liquid is not caused by clamps in bad condition. Many times, these rust or break, causing the pressure inside the hoses to generate a leak.
  • If you cannot find the fault in the pump, go to a specialized mechanic. Fluid may be being lost through the power steering seals, broken, or dried out.
  • If the hydraulic fluid has a dark hue, it means that it has rusted. Check the reservoir for holes or punctures and change the fluid.
  • Make sure a specialist checks the hydraulic steering, at least once a year.

Never hold the power steering of your vehicle over the end of travel for more than 3 seconds. You could cause serious wear and tear on the pump, affecting its performance.

Generally, when you turn the steering wheel fully and reach the stop, you will hear a metallic noise. Do not be alarmed because it is normal; as long as when you turn it, slightly, in the opposite direction, you stop hearing it. It is abnormal for the noise to persist every time you move or steer the steering wheel.

There are sealants and conditioners that are the combination of synthetic oils that repair and plug leaks from valves or seals. Consult with a specialist about its use in your car.

It happened to me once and it was low on liquid, I filled it up and the noise disappeared, now it makes the same noise and I have filled it up and it remains the same, it is more I think I have filled it above the level, so I will have to remove oil.

    Thank you
